Making sure you are always fully loaded is an important tactic that will often save your shiny metal ass. At first, I didn’t like the fact you have to reload EACH BULLET, but in no time, I was able to refill a six-shooter in less than two seconds. Ammo is abundant as long as you take the time to collect it the same with money and cores. You move with one stick and aim with the other while unloading hot lead from a variety of weapons easily cycled with the D-pad. They really nailed the twin-stick controls on the DualSense with precise movement and good button reaction despite no bespoke features being used like haptics or the speaker. The loop is simple enough spawn from the clone tube (and yes, there is a counter to log your shameful deaths), then grab some weapons and head to the lift that takes you to a small retail area where you can buy better weapons and upgrades then go to the mission station to pick from a randomly generated batch of missions of varying type, difficulty, and reward. There is a solid hour of onboarding before the training wheels come off, but the prompts and pop-ups are generally useful and non-invasive. Joe’s Snake Oil where you can essentially buy extra lives.

Almost every game system found in Dust & Neon can be upgraded with these cores including the Gun Shop, Frank’s Mind Blowers where you can get single-mission chip upgrades to make things easier, and the Buy-Back Matic where you can rematerialize guns you lost in death.

This machine can be upgraded to spit out better weapons by feeding it collectible cores found on the battlefield. Your base also has a Gun Materializer where you can grab basic weapons to get started. These are insanely fun to play around with, allowing you to enhance your character for the future fights that lie ahead.

This base serves as your hub between missions where you can enhance your cloning technology for improved respawns by spending your earned skill points on combative and defensive perks. Thousands of weapons are at your disposal once you find, buy, or craft them from their respective crates, gun store, or workshop back at your HQ. You play a robot gunslinger sent in to clean up a variety of classic western tropes with a bit of post-apocalyptic flair. The setup is short and sweet, just like the mechanical gameplay loop you are about to embark upon. Released earlier this year on PC, the charming twin-stick shooter, Dust & Neon, has finally made its way to the PlayStation 5, and having missed out on the PC version I was excited to check this one out.
